Ford Rules Tachometer Installation Ford Rules

I got Sunpro tach from Advance Auto for around $30.
I mounted the tach next to the vent. Since I do not have 4x4, I had nothing there.
There are four wires that need to be connected.

Red - 12 V when ignition is ON
Black - ground
White - 12 V w/ ignition ON or illumination on the head light swith
Green - To the Tach test connector or tach test on coil

I got the 12V from the fuse box by using the blade fuse tap-in available from Radio Shack.
Use a multimeter to find the fuse that has 12V when ignition is ON.
I used Heater fuse that is 10A

You can get the ground from most of metal surface like steering column near the pedals.
Make sure to find the good ground.
If it's painted or rusted, remove it before connecting the wire.
Using the multimeter(ohmmeter) is the best way to find the good ground.

White wire can be connected to the head light switch(dimmer),
or to the lamps that are controlled by dimmer switch.
To find the wire for dimmer from the head light swithch unit,
use the multimeter(voltmeter) and tap-in to the each wire until you find the wire
that varies the voltage w/ the dimmer switch moved.
Or you can connect to the 12V source if you do not need to dim the tach light.

Green wire needs to be connected to Tach service connector(DIS) or negetive side of coil.

See the Pic on the left.
In white circle, there is a cover for the connector, and you see the connector w/ a wire.

The tach service connector's location may vary w/ year and model,
but it should be close to the Ignition Control Module(ICM)
ICM should be located under the hood.
Picture below is 92 2.3L model.
